Mikaela Shiffrin arrived at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics as one of the most decorated and dominant alpine skiers in history. A two-time Olympic gold medalist and six-time world champion, she was widely expected to add to her legacy on the slopes of Yanqing. However, in a shocking turn of events, Shiffrin recorded two Did Not Finish (DNF) results in her first two individual races, a stunning disappointment for one of the sport’s biggest stars.
The first setback came in the women’s giant slalom, an event in which Shiffrin had previously won gold at the 2018 PyeongChang Games. With high expectations, she pushed out of the start gate but lost control just seconds into her first run, skiing out and failing to complete the course. The early exit was an unexpected blow, but she remained composed, vowing to refocus for her next race.
Just two days later, disaster struck again in the women’s slalom, her signature event. Shiffrin, who had claimed Olympic gold in the discipline at Sochi 2014, was considered the favorite. However, in another shocking moment, she skied out just five gates into her run. Stunned, she sat on the side of the course for several minutes, visibly processing what had just transpired. It was the first time in her career that she had recorded back-to-back DNFs in Olympic competition, leaving fans and analysts alike searching for answers.
Shiffrin attributed the uncharacteristic mistakes to a combination of mental and technical factors but refused to blame external conditions or pressures. She acknowledged the immense expectations placed on her but emphasized that failure is part of competitive sports. In a raw and emotional interview, she expressed her disappointment but remained resolute in her belief that setbacks do not define an athlete’s career.
Despite these early disappointments, Shiffrin continued to compete in Beijing, taking part in the super-G, combined, and team events. Though she did not secure a medal, her resilience and sportsmanship in the face of adversity garnered widespread respect.
Shiffrin’s twin DNFs at the Beijing Olympics served as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of elite sports. Even the greatest athletes are not immune to setbacks. However, her response to failure—marked by humility, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to her craft—cemented her status as a true champion, not just in victory but also in defeat.
