Atlanta, GA — The Atlanta Braves suffered a major blow on Thursday night when rising pitching prospect AJ Smith-Shawver exited his start early with what the team is calling a right elbow injury. The 21-year-old right-hander, considered one of the franchise’s most promising young arms, left in visible discomfort during the third inning of the Braves’ matchup against the Washington Nationals.
Smith-Shawver appeared to grimace after delivering a fastball that dipped nearly 3 mph below his usual velocity. After a brief mound visit from the Braves’ training staff and manager Brian Snitker, the decision was made to remove him from the game. He walked off the field without assistance, but his frustration was evident.
Postgame, Snitker expressed concern but cautioned against speculation. “Anytime it’s the elbow, you hold your breath,” he said. “We’ll know more after he gets imaging done tomorrow. He’s a tough kid, and we’re all hoping for the best.”
The potential loss of Smith-Shawver would be a significant setback for the Braves, who have relied heavily on their young arms amid an injury-plagued season. After debuting in 2023, Smith-Shawver made notable strides in 2024 and had become a key part of Atlanta’s rotation in 2025, showcasing a mid-90s fastball, sharp slider, and poise beyond his years.
Through his first eight starts this season, the Texas native had posted a 3.62 ERA with 47 strikeouts over 44.2 innings. Scouts and analysts have lauded his development, with many projecting him as a future frontline starter.

The Braves’ pitching depth has already been tested with the extended absences of Spencer Strider and Kyle Wright. If Smith-Shawver is sidelined long-term, Atlanta may be forced to explore external options or expedite the development of other top prospects like Hurston Waldrep or Bryce Elder.
Fans and teammates alike took to social media to show support for Smith-Shawver. Teammate Max Fried tweeted, “Prayers up for my guy AJ. One of the hardest workers I’ve been around. Hoping for good news.”
The Braves are expected to release an official update on Smith-Shawver’s condition following his MRI. For now, the organization and its fans anxiously await clarity — and hope this promising young pitcher’s season isn’t over before it truly began.
