In a development that has cast a shadow over the Cincinnati Reds’ pitching staff, manager Terry Francona has provided unfortunate updates on the status of two key relievers — Alex Young and Ian Gibaut. While not officially labeled as “career-ending,” the severity of their injuries has prompted widespread concern regarding their future availability and long-term outlook in Major League Baseball.
Alex Young, a left-handed pitcher who had been expected to play a significant role out of the bullpen for the Reds, was shut down for the entire 2025 season after undergoing surgery to address a chronic elbow condition. The procedure was performed in late March, and the Reds medical staff determined that a full season of rest and rehabilitation would be necessary for Young to recover properly. While the team has not definitively ruled him out for future seasons, the nature of the surgery and the chronic nature of his elbow problem have led some analysts to question whether Young will ever return to the mound at the same level of performance.
Young, known for his versatility and effectiveness against left-handed hitters, had pitched for several teams before arriving in Cincinnati. He brought with him both experience and adaptability, making his loss a notable blow to the team’s bullpen depth. Francona acknowledged the setback, expressing his support for Young but also noting the challenge of moving forward without one of their dependable arms.
Meanwhile, Ian Gibaut, another critical component of the Reds’ bullpen, has also suffered a major setback.
