SAD NEWS: The Cardinals Lose Another Highly Gifted Star To Top Rivals

Reliever Nick Anderson has signed a minor league deal with the Rockies, according to Ari Alexander of KPRC 2. The Gaeta Sports Management client had previously been with the Cardinals on a minor league contract but opted out and quickly secured a new opportunity.

Anderson had been pitching for St. Louis’ Triple-A affiliate in Memphis, making 17 appearances and posting a 6.20 ERA over 20 1/3 innings. While his strikeout rate (21.5%) and walk rate (8.6%) were decent, he struggled with hard contact and had trouble stranding runners, leading the Cardinals to pass on promoting him after his opt-out.

The 34-year-old pitched in the majors last season with the Royals, logging 35 2/3 innings with a 4.04 ERA and a 19% strikeout rate. He later had stints in Triple-A with both the Dodgers and Orioles but didn’t return to the big leagues.

Anderson has bounced around in recent years after a stellar 2019–20 stretch with the Marlins and Rays. He did provide the Braves with 35 1/3 innings of 3.06 ERA ball a couple of seasons ago and still throws in the 94–95 mph range. While Colorado’s bullpen has a respectable 4.29 ERA, it ranks last in MLB with an 18.9% strikeout rate — an area where Anderson could potentially help.
