The Chicago Cubs have announced a tough blow to their roster, revealing that catcher Miguel Amaya is expected to miss significant time due to a severe forearm injury sustained during Tuesday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Amaya, who had been emerging as a reliable presence behind the plate and a spark plug in the lineup, left the game in the sixth inning after appearing to grimace following a hard throw to second base. Initial tests suggested inflammation, but further imaging revealed a flexor tendon strain, an injury that could sideline him for multiple months.
“This is a tough one,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said in a press conference Wednesday morning. “Miguel’s worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and losing him for any stretch is a big hit—not just because of his play, but because of the energy he brings to the clubhouse.”
The 26-year-old backstop has battled injuries in the past, including Tommy John surgery in 2021. He had finally seemed to turn a corner in 2025, slashing .267/.343/.412 with solid defensive metrics and emerging as a fan favorite at Wrigley Field.
With Amaya now headed to the injured list, the Cubs are expected to recall catcher Pablo Aliendo from Triple-A Iowa. Veteran Yan Gomes will assume the starting role in the interim, though questions loom about how long the Cubs can manage without Amaya’s strong arm and improving bat, especially as they remain locked in a tight NL Central race.
Team doctors have not ruled out surgery, which could further complicate Amaya’s timeline. The organization plans to reassess his condition in two weeks, but expectations are already being tempered for a return before the All-Star break.
